What is the MELT Method?

MELT for BLOCKS and FEARS

When we have had an upsetting experience or scary fall or close call in our sport, our body can go into protective mode and works to stop us from getting hurt again. This causes the body to respond OUT OF OUR AWARENESS. We get nervous, our muscles get tight, we have an increase of negative thinking and we slow down, feel heavy or can't quite get our body to do what we want it to do. 

When we feel threatened, and our body goes into this heightened protective response, it takes a lot of ENERGY for our body to stay that way. Our Sympathetic Nervous System works very hard to pump chemicals (adrenaline and cortisol) to get us to stay on alert and scan for danger. 

We are not designed to stay in this heightened activated state.

When we do, our bodies can struggle coming out of this state. This shows up for athletes as anxiety or stress, frustration, sleep disturbances, poor performance, negative thinking and doubts, digestion issues, and fatigue.

The MELT Method helps the restore the REST mechanism of the nervous system (the parasympathetic response). Sue Hitzmann, the creator of MELT refers to this as the REST REGULATOR. 

When we MELT it helps this part of our nervous system and our connective tissue (fascia) come out of the heightened state of alert. We want to help that part of our system work EFFICIENTLY, so that we can get nervous and come out of the nervous, NOT stay STUCK there.

When we are stuck there our performance suffers and we have more FEAR and feel BLOCKED.
